Relative to other members of the wheated bourbon family, this 12-year-old W.L. Weller has been matured for a far longer period of time. This product has a gorgeous rich bronze color and is balanced, silky, and simple to drink. A closer sniff reveals toasted walnuts, licorice, and cocoa. The scent is heavy and densely layered, with cedary oak and sandalwood incense dominating. Plenty of sweet butterscotch, juicy grapefruit, and shaved coconut are presented on the palate, followed by a sweeping impression of drying oak tannins that bring coffee and dark chocolate cake to the fore.
